ACTIVITIES/PRINTABLES
Frequent speech practice is best and shows faster progress. Aim for 3-4 short (e.g. 5-10 minutes) sessions per week. This is better than trying to do an hour once a week. Think of trying to learn a new sport. The more practice you get in between your lesson will help you learn it faster. You can think about all the things you have to do (for example, in tennis, how to hold your racket) but it’s the REAL practice that really makes the difference. Learning new sounds and language skills are like this too! *ONLY correct their speech sounds or language errors during their practice sessions.
Have fun, and feel free to use whatever types of rewards/reinforcement you would like to. Some families use nothing and their child stays motivated to practice and improve, while others provide small treats for each day practiced. Other families have told me about systems they use whereby for each day their child practices, they get a check or sticker, and when they get so many checks/stickers, they get to buy a larger item. In summary, do what you need to do to keep your child motivated, and what is within your own belief system!
